Basic DIY Essential Oil Lip Balm Recipe

I recently had extremely chapped lips and my daughter kept reminding me that I needed some lip balm. Chapped lips can be so miserable with the burning and redness that accompanies. Once I finally got around to using some good quality lip balm, my lips healed so quickly!

Many of the common lip balms contain questionable ingredients such as parabens and petrolatum. [1] I much prefer to buy a safer alternative, or better yet – make my own!

Making lip balm is so very simple. It literally takes 15 minutes or so. You just dump the ingredients (minus the essential oils) into a pot to slowly melt together, remove from heat and shake a few drops of essential oils, pour the liquid mixture into containers, and you’re done! There something satisfying about making your own lip balms and herbal medicines. Your kids will feel accomplished too so make sure you include them! This DIY lip balm provides a great opportunity to be a fun lesson as part of your school day.

Below is the ingredients in the lip balm so you can go over them with your kids and teach them about these healing ingredients that are good for them.

  • Coconut oil – Coconut oil has many surprising benefits to it and is so good for the skin! It is great for the lips because of its moisturizing and exfoliating abilities! [2]
  • Shea butter or Cocoa butter – Shea butter and cocoa butter have similar properties so you can really use either to make lip balm. Cocoa butter is derived from cocoa beans, and Shea butter comes from the nuts of a Shea tree. They both have moisturizing and healing properties. Use whichever one you wish![3]
  • Beeswax is the ingredient that holds it all together and helps your project become a solid lip balm so you don’t have a huge mess on your hands!
  • And of course essential oils are added to give it a beautiful scent, and also to add more healing properties! You can add any scent that you like, or try combining a few different ones to create a unique scent you’ll enjoy all winter long! Some of the more popular scents for lip balm are: peppermint, wintergreen, orange, lime, lemon, grapefruit and lavender. [4] This set has many of the oils listed included in the set.
