Homemade Muesli Recipe

Making your own cereal for breakfast is so very easy and so much healthier than most store bought options. It’s my guess it ends up being cheaper too! While you may invest a bit at first, the ingredients last quite a while and can usually make several batches of cereal over a few months time. If you haven’t made your own granola or muesli why not give it a try!

Most people put walnuts and raisins in their muesli. But if you don’t like either of those you can substitute them with your favorite nuts or dried fruit. In the picture above I used dried cranberries, plums, cherries and blueberries. Changing out the nuts and fruit offer variety and a bit of change if you keep muesli and granola handy on a regular basis. For even more variety I added coconut to this recipe. But you can omit it, it’s optional.

  • 4 c. rolled oats
  • 1/2 c. wheat germ
  • 1/2 c. wheat bran
  • 1/2 c. oat bran
  • 1 c. chopped dried fruit of choice
  • 1/2 c. sliced almonds
  • 1/4 c. sunflower seeds
  • 1/4 c. shredded coconut (optional)

Combine all ingredients in an air tight container. Store for up to 2 months in your cupboard. You can serve this cereal hot or cold. While I like my homemade Pumpkin Flax Seed Granola cold, I prefer muesli hot.  But, I will give you directions for both.

Add equal parts hot water, milk or soy milk -your choice- and muesli. bring to a boil and then let rest on simmer for 3 or 4 minutes. Stir once or twice as needed until all liquid is absorbed. You can also cook in the microwave for 3-5 minutes. Then simply add what you like and serve.

I like to sweeten mine with almond milk. But you can add honey or raw sugar as you prefer. If you like to eat  it cold, that’s even easier.  Add equal parts milk, almond milk, or soy milk -your choice- and muesli. Soak for 5-10 min. and serve.
